The Hollywood Sign is officially dedicated in the hills above Hollywood, Los Angeles. It originally reads "Hollywoodland " but the four last letters are dropped after renovation in 1949.

Hungarian mathematician, educator and inventor of Rubik's Cube - Ernő Rubik - was born.

1945

the first atomic bomb arrived partly assembled at its test site in the New Mexico

1985

Live Aid, an international rock concert in London, Philadelphia, Moscow and Sydney, Australia, was held to raise money for Africa's starving people.

1989

Compaq Computer and IBM enter into a patent cross-licensing agreement that will include all patents filed before July 1, 1993.

IBM announced an alliance with Toshiba and Siemens to develop memory chips for computers. The international cooperation marked a shift in the semiconductor industry, which had primarily seen such companies fighting bitterly with each other for control of the market. Experts pointed to the alliance as an example of a new global economy that had little use for borders

The FCC plans to divide radio spectrums: Satellite and wireless cable

US Justice Dept. files a brief, stating Microsoft’s MSN marketing violates the Sherman Antitrust Act

2000

Kevin Mitnick comes to an agreement with the courts – although he still cannot use computers, he can consult on a new TV series and write for a website, as long as he does it on a typewriter.

2001

Code Red Worm is released. It attacks Microsoft IIS systems.

The Taliban regime bans Internet access country-wide

Malaysian consumer interest group Consumers Association of Penang launch a campaign to keep children away from computers.

Yahoo! Announces it will acquire internet search Overture for $1.63 billion

AMD releases the 1.67 GHz Athlon XP-M 2200+

Google acquires Picasa from Iealab.

Version 3.08.0 of O’Caml programming language is realeased

Versions 4.3.8 and 5.0.0 of the PHP programming language are released.

2005

Former WorldCom Inc. boss Bernard Ebbers was sentenced to 25 years in prison for leading the largest corporate fraud in U.S. history.

Fujitsu unveils the world’s first film substrate-based bendable color electronic paper.

2006

Invision Power Services released v. 2.2.2 of the Invision Power Board

2009

A 15-year-old Staten Island girl drops into open manhole while texting. The parents state they will be suing the city.

All Headline News settles an intellectual property lawsuit against the Associated Press after admitting to using their content on AHM’s site.

Blockbuster OnDemand announces they will be coming to Samsung TV’s and Blu Ray products.

2011

Netflix announced a price change, splitting up the DVD and live streaming rentals. Current customers would continue to have both until September, but new customers would have to pay $8 for DVD rentals, and an additional $8 for streaming.

Microsoft announced it will open 75 new stores in the US.
