The Hollywood Sign is officially dedicated in the hills above Hollywood, Los Angeles. It originally reads "Hollywoodland " but the four last letters are dropped after renovation in 1949.

Live Aid, an international rock concert in London, Philadelphia, Moscow and Sydney, Australia, was held to raise money for Africa's starving people.

Compaq Computer and IBM enter into a patent cross-licensing agreement that will include all patents filed before July 1, 1993.

IBM announced an alliance with Toshiba and Siemens to develop memory chips for computers. The international cooperation marked a shift in the semiconductor industry, which had primarily seen such companies fighting bitterly with each other for control of the market. Experts pointed to the alliance as an example of a new global economy that had little use for borders

All Headline News settles an intellectual property lawsuit against the Associated Press after admitting to using their content on AHM’s site.
Blockbuster OnDemand announces they will be coming to Samsung TV’s and Blu Ray products.
2011
Netflix announced a price change, splitting up the DVD and live streaming rentals. Current customers would continue to have both until September, but new customers would have to pay $8 for DVD rentals, and an additional $8 for streaming.
Microsoft announced it will open 75 new stores in the US.
